Etymology

From a Semitic language, via Ancient Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos). Doublet of ܒܪܩܐ, which was borrowed directly from Hebrew. Both ultimately derive from Proto-Semitic *bariq- (lightning); compare Arabic بَرْق (barq), Hebrew בָּרָק (bārāq).
