Etymology

Within Aramaic only in Syriac and North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic. Necessarily borrowed, due to the un-Northwest Semitic retention of initial /w/, from Arabic وَرِيد (warīd) in the environs of pre-Islamic medical practitioners. Compare also in Akkadian 𒌨𒌑𒁺 (ur'udu, windpipe, throat veins) as well as borrowed into Hebrew וְרִיד (v'rid).
