Etymology

From [script needed] (*δast-partar), a compound of ܕܣܛ (δst /⁠*δast-⁠/, “hand”), on which see دست (dast), and [script needed] (prtr- /⁠*partar-⁠/, “to dry up, wipe off”), the latter ultimately composed of the Proto-Iranian preverb *pari- and the verbal root *tarH- (“to rub, wipe (?)”) from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (“to rub”).
