From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Classical Syriac

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From Akkadian 𒁍𒁕 (gídda /giṭṭu/, document or deed written on parchment), from Sumerian 𒁍𒁕 (gídda). In other Aramaic dialects, a narrowed sense of "writ of divorce" is attested; compare Hebrew גֵּט (gēṭ). Note also Old Armenian կտակ (ktak, will, testament; covenant), borrowed from Aramaic via Iranian.
