Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܓܙܒܪܐ (gezaḇrā, treasurer, steward), from Old Persian *ganzabarah; compare Hebrew גִּזְבָּר (gizbár), Persian گنجور (ganjur) and Late Babylonian 𒃶𒍝𒁀𒊒 (gan-za-ba-ru /⁠ganzabaru⁠/).
