Contraction of ܒܲܪ ܐ݇ܢܵܫܵܐ (bar nāšā, literally son of man), from ܒܲܪ (bar, son of) +‎ ܐ݇ܢܵܫܵܐ (nāšā, the human, the person, the man); compare similar in Hebrew בֶּן אָדָם (ben adám, literally son of Adam).
