From a variant of Aramaic בַּרָא (barrā), from Proto-Semitic *barr-; cognate with Arabic بَرّ (barr) and Hebrew בַּר (bar). Doublet of ܒܲܪܝܼܵܐ (barīyā, desert; wilderness).
