Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from the earlier uncontracted form ܐܝܙܓܢܕܐ (ʾīzgandāʾ), from Manichaean Middle Persian or Manichaean Parthian 𐫙𐫋𐫃𐫗𐫅 (ʿjgnd /⁠ižgand⁠/), from Old Persian *𐎠𐎩𐎥𐎴𐎭 (*ažganda-).
