[edit]From Akkadian 𒄑𒄟 (GEŠILDAG2 /adāru, atāru, aṭāru/, “an indigenous tree, probably Populus euphratica”); compare Hebrew אֶדֶר (ʾéḏer, “a variety of tree”), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎗 (ảdr, “a variety of tree”), Sumerian [script needed] (adar, “a variety of tree or type of wood”). Note also Old Armenian անտառ (antaṙ, “forest”).
