Originally the plural form from Aramaic אֵגָּרָא (ʾeggārā, roof), from Akkadian 𒂍𒋞 (igārum, wall), from Sumerian 𒂍𒋞 (e₂-gar₈ /⁠egar⁠/, wall); also borrowed into Arabic إِجَّار (ʔijjār) from Aramaic.
