[edit]From Middle Persian KYNA (gōspand, “sheep, small cattle”), from Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊-𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬀- (gao-spəṇta-, “beneficent cow”), a compound of 𐬔𐬀𐬊- (gao-, “cow”) + 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬀 (spəṇta, “holy”), compare گاو (gâv) and سِپَند (sepand).
