Avestan

Etymology

[edit]

Debated. Possibly from Proto-Iranian *cwantah, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwen-tos, from *ḱwen- (holy, celebrated). [1] Other theories include relation to Avestan 𐬯𐬏𐬭𐬀 (sūra) from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewh₁- (to be strong, to swell)[2] or Sanskrit पनयति (panayati, praise, strengthen by praising).[3]
