[edit]Debated. Possibly from Proto-Iranian *cwantah, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwen-tos, from *ḱwen- (“holy, celebrated”). [1] Other theories include relation to Avestan 𐬯𐬏𐬭𐬀 (sūra) from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewh₁- (“to be strong, to swell”)[2] or Sanskrit पनयति (panayati, “praise, strengthen by praising”).[3]
