[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (glwʾkn' /grawgān/), 𐫃𐫡𐫇𐫃𐫀𐫗 (grwgʾn /grawgān/, “pledge, security”). By surface analysis, گرو (gerow) + ـگان (gân).
