Etymology

Inherited from Sanskrit कण्टफल (kaṇṭaphala, literally thorny fruit); cognate with Assamese কঁঠাল (kõthal), Bengali কাঁঠাল (kãṭhal), Bhojpuri कटहर (kaṭᵊhar), and Odia କଠଲ (kaṭhala).
