Etymology

[edit]

From Akkadian 𒀲𒆪𒁷 (ANŠEku-din /kūdunu, kūdanu, kūdannu, kūdinu/), also Eblaite ...𒁕𒈝 (ku17-da-núm /kūdanum/),[n 1] equated to Sumerian 𒀲𒄊𒉣 (anše-ĝir₂-nun /anšeĝirnun/, a type of equid), potentially related also to Elamite 𒆪𒌅 (ku-tu /kutu/, cattle). Found in Ugaritic 𐎋𐎄𐎐𐎚 (kdnt, she-mule), also passed into Aramaic כוֹדְנָא / ܟܽܘܕܢܳܐ (kōḏnā) / כוֹדַנֽיָא / ܟܽܘܕܰܢܝܳܐ (kōḏanyā, mule), already Palmyrene Aramaic and Imperial Aramaic, and Arabic كَوْدَن (kawdan, a beast of burden, particularly a mule or hinny), and lastly also present in Middle Persian [script needed] (kōtīna) as the name of a beast of burden, a typical Persian variation as in پودنه (pudene) and related forms.
