From Proto-Iranian *ráwčah. Compare Indo-Iranian cognates Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬗𐬀𐬵 (raocah, light, day)) and Sanskrit रोचते (rocate, to shine, to be bright)), as well as Persian روز، Laki ڕووژ (rûj)، Northern Kurdish roj and Central Kurdish ڕۆژ (roj) .
