Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráwćatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ráwčatay, from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (“white, light, bright”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬗𐬀𐬥𐬙- (raocant-, “shining”), 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬗𐬀𐬵 (raocah, “light”), Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós), Latin lūx, Old English lēoht (whence English light).
