پکڑنا

[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟𑁆- (*pakkaḍ-). Cognate to Gujarati પકડવું (pakaḍvũ), Marathi पकडणे (pakaḍṇe).
Further etymology is uncertain, but it may derive from Sanskrit प्रकृष्टयति (prakṛṣṭayati, “to catch”) or प्रगृह्णाति (pragṛhṇāti, “to hold”). The former is from प्र- (pra-, “pro-”) + कृष्टयति (kṛṣṭayati), from कृष् (kṛṣ, “to draw, lead, plough”), and the latter from प्र- (pra-, “pro-”) + गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti, “to grab, seize”).
