پژوهیدن

Persian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle Persian wcwstn (/wizōstan, wizōhīdan/, to investigate, to examine)[1]. The initial 'w' phoneme most likely first turned into 'b', which is a very common sound change from Middle Persian to New Persian (change of initial w- to either b- or gw- → g-). Afterwards, the 'b' turned into a 'p' phoneme, possibly due to the ambiguities of the Perso-Arabic script at the time, which represented both 'p' and 'b' phonemes with one letter, i.e. ب. This sound change is also seen in other New Persian words such as پوزش (pôzeš, apology) and پزشک (pizišk, doctor).
