[edit]From Proto-Semitic *waqar- (“to be heavy or weighty; a tree laden with fruits; to be honorable or to hold weight in value”), from Proto-Afroasiatic *waqar-; compare Egyptian jqr (“excellent, worthy”) and Hebrew יָקָר (“expensive, dear, precious”).
