Etymology

[edit]

Probably of imitative origin. Compare لَسَعَ (lasaʕa, to bite, to sting), لَحِسَ (laḥisa, to lick, to lap), many such terms referring to particular behaviours of animals. The etymology given by Dictionnaire du faisceau dialectal arabe andalou—prefix {+n} to ه و ش (h-w-š) or ه ي ش (h-y-š)—is schematic and unfathomable.
