نخچیر
Persian
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- نخجیر (naxjir)
Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian 𐭭𐭧𐭰𐭩𐭫 (naxčīr, “game, quarry, chase; hunting, hunt”), from Proto-Iranian *naxusčr̥ya- (“top hunting; top quarry”).
The first part naxu- ("first; top") is related to نخست (noxost, “first”), and the latter part *sčr̥ya- ("hunting; what is to be chased") is related to شکار (šekâr, “hunt, hunting”), hence the original meaning "what is to be hunted to display the outstanding skill of the hunter".
Cognate with Parthian 𐭍𐭇𐭔𐭉𐭓 (naxčīr, “game, quarry, chase”), and Sogdian ܢܓܫܝܪ (naxšīr, “wild beast; wild goat”).
