Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (m(ʾ)hmʾn' /⁠mehmān⁠/, inhabitant; guest), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meytH- (to change, exchange). Cognate with Northern Luri مؽمۏ (mêmö), Pashto مېلمه (melma).
