Etymology

Superficially literally “anchorage of the shaykh of the flea”, with a name looking like the Sudanese Arabic form بَرْغُوت (barḡūt) of بُرْغُوث (burḡūṯ, “flea”), related to be the name of a faqih whose tomb was to the north of the original anchorage, however from Beja baarʼuut referring to that sea-mark, of unknown further etymology.
