Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (mālīdan /⁠mʾlytn'⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *Hmarz- (to wipe; to rub), from Proto-Indo-Iranian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *h₃merǵ- (to wipe). Compare Sanskrit मृज् (mṛj, to wipe, to rub), Ancient Greek ὀμόργνῡμῐ (omórgnūmi, to rub).[1]
