Etymology

Clipping of قِلَحْلَاح (qilaḥlāḥ), from Classical Syriac ܩܠܚܠܚܐ (qᵊlaḥlāḥā, giant fennel; any giant stem) which is also found as كَلْخ (kalḵ, fennel), by observation of the stems of the plant. The same kind of clipping is found in لَبْلَاب (lablāb).
