[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kül- (“to laugh”); cognate with Azerbaijani gülmək, Bashkir көлөү (kölöw), Chuvash кул (kul), Kazakh күлу (külu), Kyrgyz күлүү (külüü), Turkmen gülmek, Uyghur كۈلمەك (külmek), Uzbek kulmoq and Yakut күл (kül).

- (intransitive) to laugh, show mirth by peculiar movements of the muscles of the face
- (intransitive) to smile, show joy by flexing the muscles of both ends of one's mouth
- (intransitive) to laugh at, mock, deride, make an object of laughter or ridicule
