[edit]Borrowed from Aramaic כוורתא / כורתא / ܟܘܪܬܐ (kawwārtā, “basket; beehive”), from Akkadian 𒄀𒆤𒈣 (/kuru/, “short reed mat, collection or roll of reeds; a woven thing; hence a basket”), from Sumerian 𒄥 (gur, “to twist, to wind, to turn; a bundle, unit of measure, a basketful of barley”).
