Etymology

Borrowed from Persian گنبد (gombad, dome, cupola, vault), from Middle Persian [script needed] (gwmbt' /⁠gumbad⁠/, dome, fire-temple), ultimately from Classical Syriac ܩܘܒܬܐ (qubbəṯā).
