Etymology

From the root ك ء ب (k-ʔ-b). Cognate with Hebrew כָּאַב (ka'áv, to hurt, to pain, to ache), Aramaic כֵּאבָא/כֵּיבָא (kēḇā).

Verb

كَئِبَ (kaʔiba) I (non-past يَكْأَبُ (yakʔabu), verbal noun كَآبَة (kaʔāba) or اِكْتِئَاب (iktiʔāb) or كَأْب (kaʔb))

  1. to be depressed
    Synonym: اِكْتَئَبَ (iktaʔaba)
  2. to be sad [with عَلَى (ʕalā) ‘about something’; or with لِ (li) ‘because of something’]
    Synonyms: حَزِنَ (ḥazina), وَجَد (wajad)
  3. to be worried [with لِ (li) ‘by something’]
