Arabic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Relative adjective (nisba) composed of قِلْو (qilw, base, alkali) +‎ ـِيّ (-iyy). Apparently the second vocalization is a phono-semantic matching of English alkali and the terms in other languages having the segment /kal/, like German alkalisch where the segment bears the stress.
