Inherited from Karakhanid [Term?]. Related to Kyrgyz кандай (kanday), Kazakh қалай (qalai), Tuvan кандыг (kandıg), and Yakut хайдах (qaydaq)

Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ka- (interrogative stem) +‎ *-lig (adjectival suffix)
