Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *karĺčï (opposite), a development of *kar- (to disagree; to be opposite). Cognate with Azerbaijani qarşı, Bashkir ҡаршы (qarşı), Chuvash хирӗҫ (hirĕś), Kazakh қарсы (qarsy), Kyrgyz каршы (karşı), Turkmen garşy, Uyghur قارشى (qarshi) and Uzbek qarshi.
