Inherited from Proto-Turkic *karïĺ (span);[1] cognate with Azerbaijani qarış, Bashkir ҡарыш (qarış), Kazakh қарыс (qarys), Kyrgyz карыш (karış), Tatar карыш (qarış), Uyghur غېرىچ (ghërich) and Uzbek qarich.
