[edit]- From فش (feš, “(archaic) a sibilant or hissing sound”).
- According to Dehkhoda, possibly from گلفهشنگ (galafahšang, golfahšang, “stalagmite”).
- According to Mo'in Dictionary, via Arabic, supposedly from پشنگ (pašang, “splash”)
- A common narrative in the West derives from Ancient Greek φυσίγγη (phusíngē), φῦσιγξ (phûsinx), whence Modern Greek φυσίγγιο (fysíngio).
