Ultimately from a development of Proto-Turkic *saru- (to wind around), the same root of صارمق (sarmak, to wind, wrap), زار (zar, wrapping, envelope) and صارغی (sargı, anything wound or wrapped).

  1. turban, a man's headdress made by winding a length of muslin round the head
