[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (MDYNA /šahrestān/), [Book Pahlavi needed] (štr'stʾn' /šahrestān/), 𐫢𐫍𐫡𐫘𐫤𐫀𐫗 (šhrstʾn /šahrestān/, “provincial capital, city”). By surface analysis, شهر (šahr, “city”) + ـستان (stân).
