Etymology

Univerbation of Hebrew שָׁמַע (šāmáʿ) equivalent to Arabic سَمِعَ (samiʕa) and some other word, regard بَسْمَلَ (basmala).

  1. (obsolete) said of the manner in which the Jews or sometimes presbyters recite their scriptures
    • c. 800, Abū Nuwās, according to the الكتاب: أخبار أبي نواس of عبد الله بن أحمد بن حرب المهزمي العبدي، أبو هفان (died 871)[1]:
      أَقِمْ مَعَهُمْ لَيْلَةَ ٱلْمِيلَادِ وَلَيْلَةَ ٱلذَّبْحِ فَمَا زَالَ يُشَمْعِلُ ثُمَّ غَنَّى وَطَرَبَ وَتَرَنَّمَ بِهَٰذِهِ ٱلْأَبْيَاتِ
      ʔaqim maʕahum laylata l-mīlādi walaylata ḏ-ḏabḥi famā zāla yušamʕilu ṯumma ḡannā waṭaraba watarannama bihāḏihi l-ʔabyāti
      Stand with them the day on Christmas Eve and the Eve of Slaughter as long it is recited and then sung and exulted and it is crooned in these houses
