[edit]From Aramaic אשכרא / ܐܫܟܪܐ (ʾeškārā, “plot of farmland; quota”), from Akkadian 𒂠𒃼 (eš2gar3 /iškaru/, “quota; assigned work; a field on which such a work has to be performed”), from Sumerian 𒂠𒃼 (eš2gar3).
