From Classical Syriac ܫܒܛ (šḇāṭ), ultimately from Akkadian 𒌚𒀾 (Šabāṭum). Cognate with Hebrew שְׁבָט (sh'vat, Shebat, the eleventh month of the Hebrew lunisolar calendar).
