شَاعَ (šāʕa) I (non-past يَشِيعُ (yašīʕu), verbal noun شَيْع (šayʕ) or شُيُوع (šuyūʕ) or شَيْعُوعَة (šayʕūʕa) or شَيَعَان (šayaʕān) or مَشَاع (mašāʕ))

  1. (intransitive) to spread, to become more widely present
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 24:19:
      إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ
      ʔinna llaḏīna yuḥibbūna ʔan tašīʕa al-fāḥišatu fī llaḏīna ʔāmanū lahum ʕaḏābun ʔalīmun fī d-dunyā wālʔāḵirati
      Indeed, those who love to see indecency spread among the believers will suffer a painful punishment in this life and the Hereafter.
