Inherited from Proto-Turkic *süŋgü (lance, spear); cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (süŋüg), Azerbaijani süngü, Bashkir һөңгө (höñgö), Chuvash сăнă (sănă), Kazakh сүңгі (süñgı), Tatar сөңге (söñge) and Yakut үҥүү (üñüü).

  1. anything that presents itself straight at or before one:
    1. bayonet, a pointed instrument of the dagger kind fitted on the muzzle of a musket or rifle
      Synonym: تفنك سونكوسی (tüfenk süngüsü)
    2. spine, a series of bones situated at the back from the head to the pelvis of a human
      Synonym: اوكورغه (oñurga)
    3. awn, arista, the bristle or beard of various grasses, or any similar bristlelike appendage
