Etymology

Considered a variant or closely related to ب ل ط (b-l-ṭ) in the sense of "even earth or smooth stones", "a pick-axe used to break up or break down larger rocks"; possible connections also with the root ز ل ع (z-l-ʕ) meaning "to swallow up", itself likely being a variation of ب ل ع (b-l-ʕ) also meaning "to swallow or chew up".
