Derived from Middle Persian [script needed] (lyš /⁠rēš⁠/, beard), probably from Proto-Iranian *xraiša-, from Proto-Indo-European *kreyso-, itself from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kre-i-s-, an extension of *(s)ker- (to turn, bend).[1]
