Etymology
[edit]Either borrowed from Beja duwaan (“vessel for storing liquids”), from Arabic جُوَن (juwan), the plural of جَوْنَة (jawna, “receptacle for bottles”) or, according to Pommerol (1999), an alteration of Arabic دَنّ (dann, “wine jug”). Cognate with Sudanese Arabic دوانة (duwāna).
