[edit]Adjective
[edit]خَاطِئ • (ḵāṭiʔ) (feminine خَاطِئَة (ḵāṭiʔa), masculine plural خَاطِئُونَ (ḵāṭiʔūna), feminine plural خَاطِئَات (ḵāṭiʔāt) or خَوَاطِئ (ḵawāṭiʔ))
- active participle of خَطِئَ (ḵaṭiʔa): sinning, sinful
- 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 12:97:
- قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا خَاطِئِينَ
- qālū yā ʔabānā staḡfir lanā ḏunūbanā ʔinnā kunnā ḵāṭiʔīna
- (please add an English translation of this quotation)
Usage notes
[edit]- In standard Arabic, one would expect to find خُطَّاء (ḵuṭṭāʔ) as a masculine broken plural, using the pattern فُعَّال (fuʔʔāl) also found, for example, in كُتَّاب (kuttāb), قُرَّاء (qurrāʔ), etc. The form خُطَاة (ḵuṭāh) is a colloquialism[1] derived from the participle's colloquial form خَاطِي (ḵāṭī) using a pattern normally reserved for final-weak verbs (e.g. قَضَى (qaḍā, final-weak verb) → قَاضٍ (qāḍin, active participle) [informally قَاضِي (qāḍī)] → قُضَاة (quḍāh, masculine broken plural)).
