جلوه

Ottoman Turkish

Etymology

[edit]

This may be a merger of Arabic جَلْوَة (jalwa, formal unveiling of a new bride) and جِلْوَة (jilwa, a gift given to the unveiled bride), or dictionaries may have failed to preserve the pronunciation difference. The bride-related senses were long obsolete by the 19th century.
