Borrowed from Aramaic גְּרִיוָא (gəriwā), גְּרִיבָא (gəriḇā), ܓܪܝܻܒܳܐ (gəriḇā, a dry measure; a measure of land), from Imperial Aramaic 𐡂𐡓𐡉𐡅 (gryw), of Old Iranian origin, Middle Persian [script needed] (glyw' /griw/), Parthian [script needed] (gryw' /griw/), also found in Old Armenian գրիւ (griw), probably unrelated to the homonymous Iranian words for “neck; throat” but likely related to Proto-Indo-Iranian *grabʰ (to grab, to seize), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (compare the Sanskrit root ग्रभ् (grabh)), if this is not the same word as treated under جِرَاب (jirāb) denoting a kind of bag, see there.
