[edit]Likely borrowed from Iranian, compare especially Northern Kurdish zebeş and jebeş as well as Zazaki debes. Ultimately from Middle Persian [script needed] (hlbyck' /xarbīzag/, “watermelon”); a doublet of خِرْبِز (ḵirbiz, “melon”).
