Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tevsi (“dish, plate”), a word that is already attested in Turkic from the 8th century, itself from Middle Chinese 疊子 (dep̚ t͡sɨX, “small dish; plate”). Cognate with Azerbaijani təpsi and Karakhanid تَڤْسٖی (tewsi).
